PAINFUL BUNIONS

As a Consultant specialising in the corrective foot surgery I am very concerned that there is an attempt to stop bunion surgery within the NHS.  Bunions, or more correctly described, hallux valgus is a complex foot condition.  There is an attempt to label this as a cosmetic procedure which clearly it is not.  This short-sighted view may well deprive patients from considering surgery in a timely manner.  The point about this condition is that it nearly always gets worse with time.  The obligations on clinicians is very clear, we are required to explain to patients their diagnosis and full range of treatment options.  The surgery to correct severe bunions is much more complex than that for moderate bunions.  Another example of blinkered thinking.
